The Quote

"I am a great beer lover, going way back, and I like it robust and hearty and earthy. The idea that ladies need a watered-down brew is the worst reactionary stereotyping in the world. What next?"

-- Writer Camille Paglia, quoted in the New York Post of April 5, commenting on Catalina Blonde, Anheuser-Busch's new low-calorie and low-alcohol which is being aimed at the female beer consumer.

The Comment

Hear, hear! Three cheers for Ms. Paglia! My wife is also a great beer lover and she likes beers with flavour and character, like stouts and porters and Belgian ales and lambics and Scottish ales. What she doesn't like are watery lagers that taste like weak barley tea. And you know what? She's not alone; in my experience, women are more experimental in making their beer selections than are men and they are also more likely to stick with a big, flavourful brew in place of an ordinary, commercial lager.

So how long do you think it will be before the big breweries -- or the micro ones! -- figure this out?
