Selected Events -- What's Hot in the World of Beer this MonthPenn Brewery's 10th Annual Oktoberfest September 18-20, 25-27, 1998 - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA While I do not normally feature single-brewery events on this page, this one merited inclusion owing to the fact that my mouth started to water when I was reading the press release. For two weekends, the Pen Brewery will feature their fine Oktoberfest Bier and serve up plates of sausages, grilled chicken, pulled pork sandwiches and strudel, to the tunes of German bands and "strolling accordionists." The highlight will be the annual pig roast. Call the brewery at 412-237-9402 for more information.
The Great Canadian Brewing Festival September 24-26, 1998 - Guelph, Ontario, Canada Over 200 beers from more than 50 breweries will be featured at this, the third annual beer festival at the University of Guelph. (I'll be there on Friday evening judging the best-of-show and presenting a tutored beer tasting.) Admission is $10 plus the costs of samples. For details, call Danielle Houle or Craig Moore at 519-824-4120, ext. 2219, or e-mail brewfest@hrs.uoguelph.ca
National Festival of Beers September 9-13, 1998 - Brisbane, Queensland, Australia The press release says that this is the only event of its type in Australia, and who am I to disagree? The fest will feature 100 Australian beers on tap, and as the release specially notes, they will be served in glasses rather than plastic cups. The whole thing takes place at the Story Bridge Hotel at Kangaroo Point in Brisbane and more info can be obtained by calling Richard Deeryat 61 7 3391 7326.
