Tequiza Turmoil
May 20, 1999 --
Few topics covered in World of Beer have generated the kind of response as did my review of Anheuser-Busch's tequila-and lime-flavoured beer, Tequiza, published in the March/April edition (http://worldofbeer.com/9903/tequiza.html). People either love it or hate it, it would seem, with the final tally of responses being split more-or-less down the middle with a slight edge given to the "hate it" gang.
Some comments:
"...it created so much gas in my esophagus I thought I would choke."
"I tried it and liked it. It is sweet and I enjoyed the lime in it. I usually drink Corona or Bud. I will buy this again."
"I like the taste of lime in a beer but hate to try and stuff a slice of lime in a bottle neck. Tequiza takes the work out for you."
"This is definitely a soda made by beer manufacturers...Maybe it will appeal to the chickies and the kiddies (the real target market?)!"
Now, I know that this is nothing more than a very unscientific poll, but I thought that the response, and the results, were quite interesting. One other note: In my original review, I neglected to mention that the idea of a tequila-flavoured beer is not an original one. The first such brand was Desperados, a beer from the Heineken-owned French brewery, Fischer.
