San Diego Wet Hop Festival

What is a wet hop beer? Hops are picked once a year like grapes in August or September. They are then dried and stored near freezing to help preserve them throughout the year. When they are picked, they have a high water content. So if you brew with fresh, wet hops, you must use a lot more of them to compensate for the high water weight. This means that you pack a lot more hop oil into the beer. The beers tend to be not to bitter or overly aromatic compared with normal hopped beers, but have a wonderful earthy, herbal essence to them. It is a unique hop experience that only happens once a year. This year, we hope to offer the largest collection of wet hop beers in the country for you to sample.

And Plan Ahead For ...

November 3, 2007 - Chicago, Illinois, United States

5th annual Festival of Barrel-aged Beer

The country's first and largest beer festival dedicated to the art of wood and barrel aging returns once again to Goose Island Wrigleyville in Chicago on Saturday afternoon, November 3. Make your plans now to attend, as tickets are sure to be in great demand. The beers, often aged on oak and in whiskey and wine barrels, offer unique flavors and aromas rarely seen today. They also provide a fascinating look back into brewing's past. Last year a sellout crowd of approximately 500 sampled 71 beers from 28 different breweries, representing 14 states from coast to coast. As in previous years, tickets will be available by mail and at select Chicagoland ICBG member pubs.
