Your Comments, Criticisms and Contributions - March 2003
The first announcement of the schedule for the Book and Cook Festival was published this week, and you are not listed. Have your plans changed, or will your dinner here not be part of that festival?
- Howard Rosenthal
For complicated reasons, my dinner at Monk's will not be a part of the Book & Cook this year. But Tom and Adam and I do have something in the works for March 18, and I hope to see you there. You can visit Selected Events or the Monk's website (www.monkscafe.com) for details.
Question: do you know of any gluten free beer available in Canada?
- Nena & James
Sadly, gluten-free beer is pretty much non-existent in Canada. There is a start up brewery in the States that plans to specialize in gluten-free beer, but nothing in this country, I'm afraid. For news on the US brew, check out http://www.bardsbeer.com/
I have two bottles of Thomas Hardy Ale dated 1991 and numbered one after the other. I understand that the Ale is no longer being brewed. These bottles have never been opened and never touch since I purchased them. They have been kept in the dark and in cool conditions. Do they have any value and where would I go to find out more about the value and where a person could either auction or sell them? Thank you
- Ed Longo
Where else? eBay!
But seriously, I really don't think that your Hardy's will have that much value now. You might find somebody willing to give you a few bucks on eBay or probrewer.com or the classified section of All About Beer Magazine, but I doubt that they'll yield a bonanza. Your better bet could be to save them for another decade or so -- protected under the conditions you described -- or give them as a gift to someone who would really appreciate them. Me, I'd save them for another five or ten years and enjoy them with a friend or two.
Can you tell me where to find the Belgian beer named Wittekerke in Maryland, Virginia or Washington DC?
Wittekerke is imported into the US by the Global Beer Network. Visit their site at http://www.globalbeer.com/web/body_pages/Main_p7.html to find out where it is sold.
