Taste of the Month

'Beer shake' - June 2002

One of the easiest ways to surprise people unfamiliar with the full gastronomic potential of beer, I've found, is with a 'beer shake.' This deceivingly simple concoction is created by blending robust beer - usually ale - with good quality ice cream, and when astutely done, yields a taste sensation. Something, perhaps, like this month's TOTM.

     I was experimenting with different beer and ice cream combinations for a bi-monthly column I write for a local magazine when I hit the motherload. The beer was McEwan's Scotch Ale, a rich, 8% alcohol beer of some distinction, though by no means the classic of its style. The ice cream was Madagascar Vanilla, a gourmet ice cream from the Toronto-based dairy, Metropolitan. The taste was astounding.

     I was more than a bit surprised by the match, since I didn't really expect the Scotch ale to take so well to the vanilla flavour. But when the softly molasses-like flavour of the ale met the rich, intense vanilla of the ice cream, a star was born. If you wish, you can probably replicate the experience with a Ben and Jerry's or Häagen-Dazs vanilla, but for my money, the Metropolitan is better.
