Taste of the Month

Zlaty Bazant (Golden Pheasant) - October 2002

When the beers of the former Czechoslovakia are discussed, the breweries mentioned are usually those of the Czech Republic, and for good reason. Pilsner Urquell and Budweiser Budvar are but the two most famous of a long line-up of impressive lagers brewed in that central European country.

But the other half of the old East Bloc nation has few brews to boast about, too, like an old favourite I was fortunate enough to encounter again this month - Zlaty Bazant, or as it is known in English, Golden Pheasant.

Although brewed by Slovakia's best-known brewery, and a Heineken-owned operation at that, Zlaty Bazant remains to my palate a delightful beer. It offers a faintly sweet, floral aroma and firm malt character with notes of dried leaf, caramel and mild to moderate bitterness. Admittedly not in the class of the aforementioned and instantly recognizable Czech duo, Zlaty Bazant is nevertheless a beer to make Slovakia proud.
