Frituur No. 1 - December 2002

After I gave up on the 24 Hours of Beer on Sunday evening, I decided that it was time for a 'frites off.' The contestants were Antwerp's two big players in the frites game: Fritkot Max and Frituur No. 1. I have always preferred No. 1, but when I had bumped into a frites-eating Tom Peters on the previous Friday night, the Belgophile co-owner of Philadelphia's Monk's Café had expressed a preference for Max. The issue required resolution.

While my writing partner and frequent travelling companion, Janet Forman, headed to Max, I picked up a large order from No.1. We met in the middle and adjourned to the nearby 't Paters Vaetje to sample the goods.

The decision was unanimous: Frituur No. 1 by a mile! The exterior was uniformly crisp, while the pillowy white potato interior was tender, fluffy and delicious. Max, on the other hand, had a sogginess problem that night, and of the two orders, by far more of the one from Max was left behind when Janet and I finally hit our salt and potato maximums.

Now if only North Americans could learn to make frites as good as those at Frituur No. 1. For that matter, I'd settle for some as good as Max's.
